The main characters of the book are a pair of brothers who depend on each other after the death of their parents: the older brother, Tsuyoshi Takejima, who is unemployed due to a work-related injury, commits a crime and kills a man in a desperate attempt to pay for his younger brother's schooling; and his younger brother, Naoki Takejima, who used to be an excellent student with a promising future, is forced to take on the mental debt of his murderous younger brother because of his older brother's sudden crime and has been living with the debt ever since.
